The Olive Way at Brunswick Uniting Church

In June 2007 Brunswick Uniting Church began a new initiative in the heart of Brunswick called ‘The Olive Way”.

The Olive Way is a friendship and support project for people in the Brunswick community. Our aim is to connect with the Brunswick community and provide a place for people to experience community. We provide a quiet space where people can relax, talk with someone, read the newspaper, rest, or reflect.

People can just drop in off the street for however long they wish. Since commencing, a wide range of people have dropped in for a chat, a warm drink, or to spend time in the church. We have also commenced the ‘Community Kitchen’ each Tuesday, during which participants prepare and eat a meal for lunch. Every day we provide free tea, coffee and snacks, but we are not able offer food vouchers, food parcels or money.

The Olive Way is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 1.30pm. We depend heavily on volunteers to keep the project going. We still have a number of spots to fill, and we need some ‘emergencies’ who can fill in when needed. It is not necessary to come every week.

The main requirement is to be interested in meeting new people from all sorts of backgrounds, be non-judgmental, flexible to respond to whatever happens on the day, and to be a good listener.
